ORDWAY CROWNED MR. SUPERMODIFIED FOR SIXTH TIME

Oswego, NY - Mike Ordway is Mr. Supermodified, period. Since Gene Lee Gibson won the inaugural Mr. Supermodified $10,000 to win event in 1987, Ordway has come home with six of the big pay checks. Ordway passed Greg Furlong with 8 laps to go in the 50-lap main event, and held on the rest of the way for the big win.

The evening was sponsored by Dunkin Donuts and Century 21.

Pole sitter and heat race winner Mike Brubaker was scheduled to start on the pole, but had to pull his 36 in the pits before the main began. Kells and Magner led the field to the green with Magner taking the early lead.

Two-time Mr. Supermodified Bob Goutermout charged through the field all the way up to third by lap five before the first caution of the event occurred. Ray Graham spun down the front straightaway, slapping the outside wall in his 90. He was out for the night.

On the restart, Shawn Muldoon took command, taking the lead right out of corner number four. Greg Furlong gained fifth place with Mike Ordway running right on his tail on lap 7, while Magner fell out of the top five. Kells ran second, chasing down race leader Muldoon with Goutermout, Furlong, and Ordway rounding out the top five after 11 laps.

A fierce battle in the top five soon followed. Furlong went to the outside of Goutermout to challenge for third, but Goutermout put a spectacular move on Kells to take over the runner-up position. Furlong dropped back behind Kells, only to pass him only moments later. Furlong didn't stop there, passing Goutermout, then Muldoon on lap 17 to take over the lead.

Furlong opened up a half-straightaway lead at halfway, while Muldoon, Goutermout, and Ordway ran second through fourth respectively. Goutermout and Ordway moved by Muldoon several laps later, and both reeled in race leader Furlong before yellow lights came on for Tim Snyder and Bob Magner.

Two more cautions came out before racing resumed the rest of the distance. Points leader Tim Gareau spun in turn three bringing out the caution on lap 38, and Joe Hawksby spun his number 2 in between turns one and two on lap 39 causing a traffic jam that required race officials to go to red-flag conditions.

When racing continued, Ordway turned the jets on. With $10,000 on the line, he blasted by Goutermout and Furlong with ease, and led the rest of the distance to take his sixth career, and third consecutive Mr. Supermodified title. Furlong, Goutermout, Craig Rayvals, and Doug Kells rounded out the top five.
