Wallace Thrills Crowd With First Feature Win Ever At Speedway

A 21 year old quest for that elusive first Oswego feature came to an end Saturday, when Ronnie Wallace shocked heavily favored Jimmy Shampme with an outside passing move on the last corner of the 45 lap feature, and the popular Fulton pilot nipped the 8 Ball by five feet to score a well earned super- modified win. It marked the second straight week that the five time Oswego champion has been beaten on the last lap and Wallace became the sixth different driver to reach victory lane here in 10 features in 1975. For the smooth running Wallace, it marked the end of the rainbow that started here in 1954, when he used fudged ID papers to compete here at the tender age of 16. It also marked the first trip to victory circle for his hard working car owners, Roscoe Towne and Dick Rainer. The early going of the main event looked like a Shampine night all around, as the 8 ball sped past Chuck Ciprirh to the top spot on the 15th lap. Wallace eased in behind 15 iaps later, but the Pine looked to be in full command. A rash of yellow flags slowed the field in the closing laps and after a restart with one lap to go, Wallace pressured Shampine through the first and second turns. Wallace finally drew alongside in turn three and as the pair made the mad dash for the wire, Wallace pulled away for about a half a car length win. Ciprich ran a strong third in the Herm Graff entry, marking the best finish for this team, with last week's winner, Freddie Graves, closing fast for fourth. Gary Reichert continued his rapid improvement of late and wheeled the Turner Brothers roadster into a tight fifth place finish. Modified ace, Merv Treichler, made his debut in supermodified racing at Oswego in the Ed Cloce No. 69 and the Daytona 200 winner worked his way up to sixth before catching a wheel and tapping the wall with just a lap left. Popular Michigan driver, John Logan was hospitalized with rib and shoulder injuries after popping the wall in a semi. A solid field of machines was on hand and a field of over 40 is expected next Saturday for the $12,000, 100 lap Grand Prix.
