Page Quickest

by Dan Johnson

Fulton's Howie Page picked up his second career victory at Oswego Speedway Saturday night as he dominated the supermodified feature event for the $2000 win. Page started the race from the inside of the third row and inherited the lead early in the race when Tim Snyder was sent to the pits with a fluid leak on the 0 car.Page then turned in some of the fastest laps at the track all year as he drove away from the field for the impressive 4.06 second win.

After an hour and a half rain delay, Jerry Curran and Tim Snyder started the event from the front row. Snyder took the lead at the start of the race and quickly opened a five car length lead over Curran, while Page got by Ray Graham and Hal Latulip in the first two laps to take over third place. On lap two. Page passed Curran's 24 car and set after the 0, which was turning in relatively slow laps of 17.89.

An early race battle between Tim Gareau and Bob Goutermout resulted in the first yellow flag of the race. They tried to go three abreast going into the third turn, with Curran in the middle. Goutermout, who was on the outside, got the worst of it as the 93 ended up in the third turn wall. Also involved were the Jeff West 01, the Doug Boisvert 67, and Shannon Groves 07. During this yellow flag period, leader Snyder was stopped by track officials and it was determined that the 0 had a fluid leak and was sent to the pits, handing the lead to Page.

Gareau went right to work on the Curran 24 and took over second place on the restart. Mike Muldoon and Todd Stowell resumed their battle from the last two weeks, this time for third place. Muldoon held the spot with Stowell working him on the outside. They followed Gareau past Curran, making the top five Page, Gareau, Muldoon, Stowell, and Curran.

Page turned up the race pace as he clocked laps of 17.41 and 17.36 to build his lead to a full three second advantage. The next few laps Page showed no signs of letting up as he quickened the pace to 17.22 and 17.20 laps. Greg Furlong's nice run slowed a bit on lap 17 as the motor on the 72 began to break up. Furlong started last as he pitted before the green flag and raced all the way up to fifth place in 17 laps before the malfunction.

A lap-24 spin by Boisvert in between the third and fourth turns slowed the action again. The top ten on this restart near halfway of the 50-lap event, were Page (whose 3-second lead was now gone), Gareau, Muldoon, Stowell, Curran, Ray Graham, Hal Latulip, Bobby Smith, Billy Whittaker, and Mike Bond. Page picked up right where he left off as within a few laps of the restart he clocked the fastest laps of the race with 17.24 and 17.16 laps. His lead was back up to 15 car lengths within a few laps over Gareau, who now had a bumper full of Mike Muldoon.

Page came into heavy lapped traffic on lap 39, which he handled with ease. He cruised comfortably in the closing laps padding his lead. When the checkered flag came out, he beat Gareau by 4.06 seconds. Muldoon held on for third, with Stowell in fourth and Curran with his best career finish in fifth.

"The car ran perfect tonight/' Page said after his popular win. "I've been waiting for this for so long, I didn't think it was ever going to come. Hopefully I can keep it this way. I just tried getting through the lapped cars as best as 1 could." Tim Gareau, who had an unsettling night, said later, "I'm just happy to see Howard win. The way the night was going for us, second is good. Out there in the caution, I broke a torque arm and the crew had to get that fixed. In the heat we had a problem and in warmups something broke in the steering. The crew did a heck of a job. So, we'll take a second tonight and congratulate Howard. He was really fast and I'm glad for him. Our time is coming.. .one of these nights."

Muldoon, in third, commented, "We just missed the setup tonight. We're happy to go home in one piece and have a third place. We were sliding in Timmy's oil and it's tough to race that way. But, we'll be back next week and hope to do a little better. I'd like to congratulate Howie on a great win.
