JEFF WEST REDEEMS WITH OSWEGO SUPER WIN

Oswego, NY - Jeff West lost the August 1 supermodified event halfway through the last lap of the race. On Oswego Quality Carpet Night, West was back to redeem himself. He took the lead from Tim Snyder on lap 11 and never let up for his much awaited-first feature victory of 1999.

Jeff West's disappointment on August 1 turned to big smiles on August 7 as he spoke in victory lane. "I was driving with a reason tonight. We lost a hard one last week. I got a little upset and I have to apologize for the way I acted after the race to Ray Graham first of all. That was poor sportsmanship on my part. But, tonight makes up for it. I figured this place owes me one. Besides that, the night was just a great thing. My crew did a great job. And thanks to my sponsors, the Little While Restaurant, Molson, Finger Lakes Bottling, Top Stitch, Genesee, Gary's Sports Bar, AFCO Shocks, Moshier Racing Engines and Modern Rock K-Rock for being behind me. It's a team effort no matter what you do. You wreck these things and you bring them back week after week. These guys keep digging. We were all pretty down after last week. I can't say enough about them. I was on cruise tonight. I wasn't even thinking about those lap cars late in the race. Timmy gave me a run and I tucked her down there and I know he'd have to go to the outside. I wasn't letting anyone pass me on the inside tonight."

Tim Snyder, sponsored by the night's sponsor Oswego Quality Carpets, took the early lead but mayhem soon prevailed when Todd Stowell and Greg Furlong came together off turn four while running in the top five. Everyone scattered, including point leader Mike Muldoon, but he soon was tapped by the 24 of Jerry Curran. Furlong called it a night here while Stowell and Muldoon got back out on the track. Bob Goutermout brought the 93 in due to unrelated problems.

The green for the restart was followed immediately by a yellow for the 7 of Bill Sharkey which laid down some heavy oil all around. This gave Muldoon the opportunity to come in a change a bad tire and also helped out Todd Stowell, who had restarted a little late. Snyder was the leader for several more laps before a determined Jeff West caught him on the outside in turn one. Yellow flew again on lap 15 for the 14 of Bill Peri, who was able to continue.

West lost his advantage on the green as Tim Gareau closed in with Snyder losing a spot to Mike Muldoon on lap 17. Mike Bond and Bob Bond were next in line behind Muldoon. A precautionary yellow brought the action to a halt on lap 30 when a huge puff of smoke emitted from the Bond 22. Bond was checked over and allowed to continue, but after circling the track once, he pitted with obvious problems.

Tim Gareau, who had also been shy of a feature win this year, fought as fiercely as West in the remaining 15 laps. Gareau got almost alongside on lap 33, but West edged out ahead. Muldoon and Snyder ran unchallenged in third and fourth with rookie Ray Graham pulling past Mike Bond for fifth on lap 36. Bob Goutermout and Todd Stowell worked their way back up from back of the pack starts to battle for sixth and seventh, while Bob Bond, Hal LaTulip and Tim Devendorf ran top ten.

West came by a couple lap cars late in the going in a deja vu scenario, but this time he came out on top, unlike six days prior. Crossing under the checkered amidst a wealth of applause, it was West, Gareau, Muldoon, Snyder and Graham. Goutermout, Stowell, Bob Bond, Hal LaTulip and Tim Devendorf maintained their top ten runs.

Second place runner Gareau, who also sat second in the Oswego points going into the night's racing said later, "The car was set up pretty good. Actually, it was the best it's run all year. I'd like to congratulate West on his win. I was right there in second and I believe we're going to win one yet. We'll just have to come back next week and try it again."

And Muldoon, who is on course to a possible third straight Oswego title commented, "We got wrecked there and we had to change a tire and we just missed the stagger. It's tough to set the stagger with one new tire and three used ones in such short time. We'll take third and come back next week. We had a great car tonight. The car was awesome. The best it's been all year. We hope we can get it all straightened back around for next week. But, we've got to congratulate Jeff. He deserves a win."
