 Rhubarb Highlights
 Consolation Race
 At Oswego Raceway

   Huge Throng Cheers Disqual
   ified Chuck Mahoney; Bobby
   Sund Wins Feature Event

Think the Democratic convention was confusing?
You should have been out to Oswego Speedway
last night.
When the consolation race was over the fans were
treated to the biggest rhubarb since the lip left
Brooklyn and became the "new" Leo Durocher.
Nineteen cars had started in the bread and butter
event. Accidents had knocked five out. One of these
rolled over in front of the stands and forced starter
Fred Chalone to wave the red flag and bring the race
to a temporary halt.
The rule in a situation like this appears simple, the
cars line up in indian file in the order in which they
had been running when the race was stopped. They
go into the fourth turn in a flying start with the
leader setting the pace.
Chuck Mahoney of Rome NY tried to aid his cause
by going outside of the field on the turn. He got a
big jump which put him in contention when the
green went down. From there he coasted to an
apparent victory.
When he crossed the finish line, however, he was
not given the checkered flag. Paul Korman of Vernon
was waved in as the winner.
This incited, what appeared to be a near-riot.
First Korman declined to carry the checkered flag
around the track as the usual symbol of victory.
Then an angry Mahoney parked his car at the finish
line and took out after track manager Lucky Raponi.
The track police, doing an admirable job, separated
the pair and tried to calm down the Rome driver.
The fans were all on their feet booing the officials
and cheering Mahoney.  The booing turned even
louder when, after a long delay, it was announced
that Mahoney had been disqualified right from the
start. Most of the spectators were asking why, if that
were the case, Mahoney had not been flagged down
at the beginning. It seemed absurd to them that he
should have been allowed to risk his neck and his
car In a race he could not win. Mahoney was asked
to remove his car from the track. The car remained.
A call went out for the tow trucks to remove the
vehicle. Nobody budged. Finally,  the angered Raponi
ran to a tow truck and with a great clashing of gears,
brought it in position to drag off the stock car.
By the time the truck was in place, it was evident
that there would be more trouble. About 50 drivers,
attendants, officials and police were surrounding the
car.  The tow line was never attached.
Mahoney had the car driven from the track under
it's own power, leaving amid a storm of cheering.
Raponi was roundly booed, so was Chalone.
It was nearly midnight when the feature race began
and it was a definite anti-climax.
Bobby Sund of Buffalo was the winner. Chuck Kotwica
of Rome was second and the two current point leaders,
Jack Murphy and Billy Blum, finished third and fourth
respectively.
