Kenny Andrews
Burlington, ON
15.Dec.1928 - 08.Apr.2016
A real estate broker by day in Burlington, Ontario, Andrews was a fierce Supermodified competitor at Oswego on the weekends, earning a total of 20 main event victories and 75 top five finishes in a career that spanned just eight seasons driving his famous No. 55 creations.
While Andrews was the Speedway’s first Canadian track champion in 1969, scoring five features events during the year including the first three of the season consecutively, some would say his shining moment was his come from behind effort at the 1973 International Classic.
Kenny Andrews recovers from practice crash for Classic win
Kenny Andrews, was the favorite going into the '73 Classic having won most of the long distance races during the regular season. But as luck would have it Andrews crashed during practice just before time trials and damaged the car serious enough to require an overnight rework. Andrews came back to the track the next day and easily qualified through the heat races and earned a 31st starting position.
'The Jimmies' - Shampine and Winks started in the front row. Shampine grabbed the early lead and swapped it back and forth with Winks, who was aboard the Purdy deuce, while Eddie Bellinger, Baldy Baker and Doug Syer provided competition to the front runners for many laps.
Winks had it all his own way as the race wore on but by lap 130 Andrews had come from 31st all the way to second. Andrews took the next 40 laps to catch Winks in the deuce. The two battled for about 10 laps and Andrews finally got underneath Winks in turn two and took the lead and it was Andrews all the way to the finish line for his '73 Classic win. As Winks faded at the end, Warren Coniam in the Solvay Automotive 04 came on for the runnerup spot.
