TIM GAREAU GETS FIRST SUPER WIN
Oswego, NY - Timmy Gareau has been searching high and low for his initial supermodified victory at Oswego.. After seven top five finishes, Gareau finally notched the number one spot on Dunkin Donuts night Saturday. Mike Muldoon, leading the point race going down the stretch, added to his lead by finishing second to Gareau.
Said an elated Gareau after his much-sought after win, "The traffic was tough there. Greg (Furlong) got me in traffic. We had a good race going there for a while. The more heat I got in my tires, the more the car pushed on me. I had a tough time in traffic and when we came up on those cars, he got by. It's too bad he was involved in that wreck. I've been waiting for this win all year. I have to thank my crew for hanging with me all season. I kept telling them I was going to win one. They got the car back together, running good and hopefully we'll do good in the Classic this year. I have to thank all my sponsors for their support, Burger King, Darcey's Collision, Fran's Riverfront, Sunshine Produce, Triple D Trucking, Otto's Cafe, Duplessis Plowing, Overhead Door, and Pachy's Firewood. And, finally thanks to all the fans."
Bobby Bond and Todd Stowell were the early leaders of the Dunkin' Donuts 45, but eight-place starting Tim Gareau was a man on a mission. By lap 6 he dove under Stowell for the lead. Hot on his tail, however, was another man looking for victory, Greg Furlong. Greg's last couple weeks have been a series of dnf's and he, too, was hungry.
As the lead duo of Gareau and Furlong took off and began to hide in traffic early on, caution befell another victory seeker, Bob Goutermout. Bob, coming into four, brushed a rear tire on the Snyder 0 and into the wall he went, sliding a good distance before stopping. His car was badly damaged and Bob momentarily shaken.
On the restart, Furlong stuck to Gareau like glue as Mike Muldoon, Stowell and Jeff West ran a tight 2nd through 5th. Ray Graham, Bond and Hal LaTulip ran a car length or two behind.
As Gareau stated, traffic was tough and past the halfway mark, the 5 and 72 were dicing in and out, high and low. Timmy came up behind the 66 of Doug Boisvert and instantly Furlong tucked his nose ahead of Gareau for the lead. Gareau stayed right with the 72, as he finally got by the 66. But Furlong's luck was about to run out, again. On lap 31, the 25 of Bob Bond spun sideways just before turn four. Coming up on Bond, Hal LaTulip had choice. T-bone Bond or hit the foam.
He chose the latter, but unfortunately collected Furlong also. He, too, had no choice. Furlong and LaTulip were hooked, Bond drove to the pits but needed repair.
On the restart, Gareau was in command, although Mike Muldoon was right behind him. Stowell and West were separated from the 50 by some traffic while Timmy Snyder swapped positions with Ray Graham on the green. Bill Sharkey moved in behind Graham, but soon exited the track with mechanical woes.
Gareau, not knowing Muldoon was a healthy distance back, drove as hard as he could to the checkered, too hard he said later. Muldoon, Stowell, West and Snyder rounded out the top five. Jamie Moore in the Lair 17, Graham, Boisvert, Mike Bond, followed by brother Bob, completed the top ten.
