Gresley Credited With Fall
Championship Race Victory
Oswego Palladium - September 1963
In an unprecedented performance.
Jim Gresley. of Cerealo
Mich., was credited with capturing
first place in Saturday's
Fall Championship Race at the
Oswego Speedway, as the program
brought to an end the 1963 season,
with the exception of the annual
International Classic, scheduled for
next Sunday afternoon.
If the wording of the above
paragraph seems a trifle unusual,
there is a valid reason
for the out of the ordinary
phrasing, Gresley, hampered
by a fractured shoulder, suffered
some time back, abandoned his #111
in favor of Art Bennett, while the
50 lap special was halted during a
minor accident early in the race.
Bennett went on to win by two car
lengths over 1963 track champion
Dave Paul and it marked the first
time in the 13-year history of the
Oswego Speedway that a relief
pilot had participated once a race
had been started.
The Fall Championship Race
was marred by numerous stops
and only 11 of 18 starters managed
to complete the distance.
