Veteran Oswego supermodified driver from New Toronto, Ontario, Norm Mackereth impressed a top shelf 41 car. field, as well as a near full house of spectators by winning his heat, semi, and the 45 lap feature with his blue Hagen-Howard Car 40. The feature got off to a wild start as outside pole sitter Jack Conely faultered coming off the fourth turn causing a wild mixup in the balance of the field. Cars involved included the 29 of Mark Letcher, the 25 of Russ Gray, the 7 of Jungle Jim Gresley, the 90 of Ronnie Wallace, the 37 of Fred Graves, the 16 of Sam Carista and the 55 of Ken Andrews. When the race was restarted Jack Conely jumped to an early lead. Norm Mackereth and Jim Shampine were right there however unwilling to let Conely get a big lead. As the laps went by, Mackereth and Shampine got itchy for the lead and on lap 14 going down the backstretch they made their bid. Conely went to the inside of a lapped car, Mackereth and Shampine both went to the outside. There they were, 4 abreast and coming to the turn. Somebody had to give. Shampine on the outside ran out of race track and had to spin it or hit the wall. The race was put under caution with the 8 ball being sent to the rear. Conely held the lead until lap 20 when Norm stroked the 40 past the 27 and out to the front. Other feature finishers were in order: Jack Conely 26, Bob Cloutier 5, Nick Rowe 12, Fred Graves 37, Jim Gray 31, Lou Dabrowski 85, Paul Richardson 34, Russ Gray 25, Jim Shampine 8, Harvey Lennox 70, Lou Moll 61, John Caselinuovo 88, Mark Letcher 29, Joe Martincic 53, Tony Lavati 24, Ronnie Wallace 90, Jim Gresley 7, Ken Andrews 55 and Sam Carista 16. Heat races were won by Mackereth, Hlywka and Harv Lennox with semis going to Conely and Mackereth. Bob Cloutier won the consi. |
