Baldy Baker of Strausberg, Ohio and Freddie Graves of nearby Central Square each sported one feature win in last Saturday night's "Twin 50's" features here at Oswego Speedway. Baldy brought the 93 home first in the first feature while Fred drove the 37 to the top spot in the second 50 lap segment. But the overall big winner of the night was Baldy - with first and second place finishes for his night's work totaling over $1,675 for the popular Ohio throttler. At the outset of the first 50 lapper, Baldy starting from the pole position blasted off to a large lead, leaving the rest of the pack fighting away for second spot. Fred Graves came along and took over second but midway through the feature tangled with a lapped car in the front chute resulting in the 37 spinning wildly down into the first turn where Freddie tapped the outside wall. He was towed to the pits to make repairs. This left Don MacLaren and Jimmy Shampine fighting away for second as even on the restart neither driver could muster any challenge to Baker. When the checkered came down, Baldy held a good straightaway lead over MacLaren who finished second and the 8 ball of Shampine who took third. Jim Cheney piloted the Holynski car 19 to a fine fourth place finish with Bob Stelter rounding out the top five in the Solvay car 04. The second 50 lapper proved to be much more exciting. There was the usual scramble to the front after Norm Bacon dropped the green flag and coming quickly up through the field was Jim Shampine and his 8 ball. Not too far behind was Fred Graves while Jim Cheney, Don MacLaren, Kempton Dates and Baldy Baker put on a fine battle for third. As the race wore on Shampine seemed to have everything well in hand, holding a comfortable lead over the rest of the field. But Shampine began smoking very badly and it was apparent the popular Clay ace was losing oil and the 8 ball was black flagged to the pit area and thus the lead was given to Graves. Fred held on to take the win, while Baldy came charging through for a fine second place finish. Don MacLaren put the Ed Bowley car 5 in for third place money with Jim Cheney again taking fourth and fifth spot going to Kempton Dates in the 28. Official Order of Finish (1st Feature) - Baker, 93, MacLaren 5, Shampine 8, Cheney 19, Stelter 04, Bodine 99, Grant 17, Syer 72, Matteson 80, Peckham 44, Rouse 24, Dates 28, Gray 85, Seelman 74, Muldoon 23, Rose 4, Grave 37, Buckner 36, Wheeler 96, Clapham 9, Boss 33, Miuccio 77 and Sand 16.
