Jimmy Shampine and his clean green machine chalked up another one last Saturday night as he showed his competitors and the fans alike that he could run low inside as well as high outside. Bob Stelter in the 04 grabbed the early lead and held on until hard charging Ken Andrews, running the best so far this season, came charging on. Ken wasn't able to open up much of a lead as Shampine was coming up through the field rapidly and in several laps time was on Andrew's bumper. Jim tried going on by a few times but couldn't quite do it, so he figured the "traffic trick" worked on Spencer - it will work on Andrews - and it did, Jim caught the 55 in in traffic and went out into the lead on lap 27. But this plan almost backfired as Shampine got boxed between some slower cars and Andrews came dangerously close to taking back the lead. Shampine quickly broke loose though and opened up a sizeable lead again. For an evening that was run almost accident free, the last 5 laps of the feature made up for it. On lap 41 - going into turn three, the hood on Freddy Graves car 37 came up causing a six car pile up. Involved were - the 09 of Bryan Osgood, the 04 of Bob Stelter, the 45 of John Clapham, the 66 of Red Barnhart, and the 59 of Eldon Schrader. Unfortunately Bob Stelter was able to start the race again - unfortunate because on the last lap of the feature, the brakes on the 04 let go as he was rounding into turn 3. It slammed full bore into the 85 of Lou Dabrowski, sailed up over this car and began a series of flips along the fence. Bob was shaken up but otherwise O.K. but the 04 was virtually demolished. Meanwhile back at the finish line - the checkered flag had already gone to Jimmy Shampine in the 8 ball followed by Ken Andrew with Nolan Swift in the l0pins a close third. Johnny Spencer worked his way up to fourth place finish in his 07 just ahead of hard charging Gordy Dukes of Findlay, Ohio who filled the fifth slot. Other feature finishers in order were - Joe Hlywka 9, John Clapham 45, Bob Stelter 04, Joe Martincic 53, Ronnie Wallace 90, Harvey Lennox 70, Dick Jerrett 80, Fred Graves 37, Lou Dabrowski 85, Red Barnhart 66, Bryan Osgood 09, Eldon Schrader 59, Kempton Dates 28, Norm Mackereth 40, Jim Gray 31, Gary Witter 19, Duane Knoll 69, Warren Coniam 26 and Jim Muldoon 23. Heat races were taken by Bob Stelter, John Spencer and Jim Shampine with the semis going to Ken Andrews and Spencer. The consi was won by Norm Mackereth. |
