One streak ended last Saturday night on Universal Joint Night at the Oswego Speedway, but another streak stayed intact. Doug Heveron had not lost in nearly five weeks and last week finished second. However, he was runner up not in the 45 lap feature, but the 15 lap semifinal. When the night was completed Heveron led a one-two-three yellow car sweep as he won his sixth straight while Ed Bellinger Jr. and Jamie Moore rebounded from non-finishing streaks to come across second and third. Heveron talked about the events of the evening and noted, "Ciprich was running strong. In the semi he got a three or four car length lead and I tried to win, but he just ran better! I don't mind losin' to Chargin' Charlie as he is a good driver." However the Heveron-Ciprich showdown never materialized in the feature. In the early moments of the race, as the field headed into the first turn, Lew Bannister's tire touched the 00 of Joe Gosek. Chuck Ciprich, running the high road, went over Gosek's tire, did a wheel stand on his right front, slammed into the steel barrier and came to rest after a wild wall riding trip between the first and second turns. A brief fire flared up in the engine compartment and after five minutes he was put in the ambulance and taken to the Oswego Hospital. He was later transferred to Upstate Medical Center in Syracuse and was reported in good condition Monday morning. The race resumed, but three laps later Dean Hoag spun in three and Paul Castiglia went high, into the loose stuff, and careened off the wall. Hal LaTulip was also involved as the second red of the race came out. When the green came out again Brian Herb set the pace, but on the eighth lap Heveron went under Bellinger in four, and completed the pass in the second turn. He then set sail after the 11 and on the 10th go around shuffled Herb back to second between one and two. As the race progressed Bellinger, Moore, Steve Gioia, Jr. and Bentley Warren ran nose to tail for the runner up spot while back in seventh it was a dogfight between Larry Record, Mike Schoeberlein, Mike Rizzo and Don Rammage along with Ed Thompson. Only two other cautions slowed the race as Bannister's machine spun in the second turn and tapped the wall while Tom Johnson went into the first turn hubrail. At the checker Doug Heveron had a near four second lead over runner up Ed Bellinger, Jr. while Jamie Moore took third, Steve Gioia Jr. fourth and Bentley Warren fifth. In sixth was Brian Herb while Larry Record came in with seventh followed by Mike Rizzo, Mike Schoeberlein, Ed Thompson, Mike Reuter, Joe Hawksby, John Torrese Jr., Don Rammage, Tom Johnson, Chip Simmons, Ron MacLeod, Lew Bannister, Paul Castiglia, Hal LaTulip, Dean Hoag, Joe Gosek and Chuck Ciprich. Capturing heats were Heveron, Castiglia and Ciprich while in the semi's Ciprich and Moore copped checkers and Hoag came back with the consi win. It was yet another night of racing which saw a winner repeat. Doug Heveron has proved he is going to be tough to stop, but with the quartet who finished behind him and a healthy Warren Coniam machine(motor problems) the future will be interesting.
