What a difference one week can make.

Two weeks ago, "the Young One", Doug Heveron was towed into the pits after problems in the third turn, but last Saturday night the youthful driver visited victory lane not once, not twice, but three times in capturing not only his heat, but the Cole Muffler Twin 35's.

The day started out with the Heveron crew making an engine change. However by the time the third heat had been completed Doug had been labeled, "the favorite" by the majority of fans and pit observers by virtue of his shattering 17.5 clockings (which would have easily broken the track record had they been turned in time trials).

By the time the Twin 35's had been completed Heveron had held off the challenges of the majority of top runners, withstood some overheating woes, managed to steer clear of problems due to spins and crashes, outdistanced the rain and wasn't bothered by the light outages in turn four.

Heveron started outside of the second row in feature number one and it took him five laps to get past Ed Bellinger Jr. He gained some breathing room, but the field regrouped when the yellow came out for a stalled 17 of Paul Castiglia. Light problems then slowed the main for a few minutes, but on the restart the yellow machine roared away. The battle was shaping up for second with Bellinger being hotly pursued by Bentley Warren, Warren Coniam and Larry Record. Also vying for money spots were Lew Bannister, Steve Gioia Jr., Dean Hoag, Joe Gosek, Mike Rizzo, Mike Schoeberlein, and Gary Kelley. By the 30th lap the top eight positions remained unchanged and the two lead cars had quite a bit of breathing room. Coniam was chasing the 77 of Warren, but when the checker fell Heveron had a five second win while Bellinger was runner up once again.

Behind Doug Heveron and Ed Bellinger at the conclusion of the first 35 were Bently Warren, Warren Coniam, Larry Record, Lew Bannister, Steve Gioia Jr., Dean Hoag, Mike Rizzo, and Joe Gosek. Filling the remainder of the field were Mike Schoeberlein, Dave Morton, Don Rammage, Gary Kelley, Tom Leeson, Joe Hawksby, Bob Garvey, Tom Johnson, Dan Dennie, Paul Castiglia, John Torrese Jr., Terry Johnson, Russ Sauter and Chip Simmons.

The 24 cars which started the first 35 returned to the racing surface for the next event.

Rain made frequent appearances and either slowed or stopped the competition from time to time. The second 35 was also held up due to mishaps.

At the green Mike Schoeberlein jumped out to the early lead from his pole position. After a yellow for a spinning Morton it was Steve Gioia Jr. taking over the front spot with a move in turn three on lap number three. Just one lap later Heveron went under the nine exiting turn two and was in the lead for good.

Lap 11 brought out the red as the wheels of the 14 (Schoeberlein) and 59 (Morton) came together in turn one. Mike's machine careened into the wall as the crash inflicted severe damage all around the Schoeberlein ride.

On the restart Bellinger began to make his move, but rain then halted the race for a few moments. On the restart Heveron was followed by Gioia, Bellinger, Coniam, and Record. However just a few laps later the yellow showed its ugly color once again as something apparently broke in the right front of the Dean Hoag 2. The car went into the back stretch wall and sustained heavy damage. Rain and dark lights stopped the action again, but on the restart Heveron began to put some room between himself and the rest of the field. By the 19th lap Bellinger had finally battled his way under Gioia for second as the pair raced through turns three and four.

By the 25th lap it was Coniam moving up to third as he went high around Gioia entering the third turn.

Another slow down for rain resulted in yet another restart and with it Bellinger pulled alongside Heveron. Later Doug said, "I was surprised to see him there. I just had to get going."

As the laps wound down Bellinger fell by the wayside as the 02 kept jumping out of gear and during the closing stages of the race Bannister worked his way past Record for yet another fine feature finish.

When the final standings were tabulated Doug Heveron was followed by Warren Coniam, Steve Gioia Jr., Lew Bannister, Larry Record, Tom Leeson, Joe Gosek, Mike Rizzo, Bob Garvey, and Dan Dennie. Filling out the field were Joe Hawksby, John Torrese Jr., Ed Bellinger Jr., Gary Kelley, Don Rammage, Terry Johnson, Dean Hoag, Russ Sauter, Mike Schoeberlein, Tom Johnson, Bentley Warren, Dave Morton, Chip Simmons and Paul Castiglia.

Another incident on the last corner of the final lap saw Dan Dennie and Gary Kelley suffer extensive front end damage. Both drivers were uninjured.

After it was all over Heveron said, "We finally got one here. The car was working good and is as quick as I've ever gone." Continuing he said, "It would be kind of nice to do this every week."

Winning the prelims were Coniam, Castiglia and Heveron while Rizzo, who suffered from fuel pick up problems throughout the night ran and hid from the consi field.
