Hello from the West coast, first off my name is Al Martin and I'm blown
away buy the Website you have developed and posted on these former East
coast and mid west Supermodified racers from the past, you have a lot of
info that till now I never new about, or my mentor as in Edsol Sneva,
the father of the 1983 Indy 500 Winner Tom Sneva knew about.
Sure Edsol Blaine and I know a lot of people in this type of racing but
being out West kind of kept us in the dark and always too busy working on
our equipment to pay much attention what was going on back there in the
70s through the 80s. We have always known that back east is where it's at
for this type of open wheel racing, and we only wish we had the funds
to travel back there to compete once in a while against the best drivers
in any motor sports and the fastest short track cars ever. WOW, three
wheeling Ken Reece, what a Wizard of a builder, and the HITE Four wheel
drive rear engine Super.
Till this day we have been lost souls in the dark not hearing or
knowing about these two Legend designers of their time.
We had been involved in C.A.M.R.A Canadian American Modified Racing Ass.
back in the 60s and 70s as myself a kid back then always helping out the
Snevas over those years of Super racing out west here as I and Edsol
youngest son Blaine grew up together Knowing one day Big Ed would come a
calling for Blaine to step into Toms shoes in C.A.M.R.A Supers and later
in USAC . Edsol and his five son's when growing up back then always
helped and learned from their father, a master in his own right to build
and design the trickest Supers out west here as the eldest Sneva and
long time friend Jim Tipke built their first rear engine 4 wheel drive
Super mod in 1968 that Tom would campaign in 1969 & 70 C.A.M.R.A seasons
and winning the Championship in 1970 then going on to Indy in 1973 with
another Sneva / Tipke Indy car built here in Spokane, Wa. That Rear
engine 4 wheel drive car was banned after the 1970 C.A.M.R.A season as
Tom was unbeatable in it those two years. The W.S.S.R.L Western States
Supermodifieds Racing League has it posted in their rules that since the
Sneva days of 4 wheel drives this has not been allowed and never will be
again in this class of racing for over thirty five years this has been
in the rules for all west coast open wheel sprint car's out here.
I
would like to know more on how to contact Mr. Ken Reece or Mr Hite if
at all possible and if you have any info on who to contact to be able to
reach them two innovating legends it would be appreciated.
The pictures are of some of Sneva's designs over the years of racing in
the northwest including the four wheel drive car that was banned in 1971
that Tom drove, and the 1989 Rear engine 4 wheel steer Supermodified
510 Cubic Inch injected Pontiac Poncho Motor of Earl Wham also the
famous recreation of the New Pinklady 2 NW Modified of Art Sugai's
Modified days and Edsol Sneva as his driver back then in the 40s and 50s
it still lives today as the Sneva's are involved with the N.W.M.R.S NW
Modified Racing Series since 1995 and The youngest Sneva Blaine promotes
that team car today , Blaine is still behind the wheel as we will
continue into our 62nd consecutive year of Sneva Racing in the NW .
Edsol Sneva continues to build new machines at the age of 81 these days
and he ain't lost a step in doing it since 1946 ! . So again please if
anyone can point me in the direction of Mr Reece and Hite It would be to
cool to speak to them if possible .
Thanks alot
Al Martin
